House Fly

The house fly is named because it is the most common fly found around the home. House flies are under ¼” long, and if you look closely have stripes behind their head. They are nocturnal flies, resting at night and coming out to feed during the day. Highly adapted to our environments, the house fly can feed on just about anything – even liquids. These are the most efficient disease spreading flies, often feeding in areas of filth and then regurgitating (or even worse) on human food items. Females lay eggs on moist food materials, and the maggots that hatch out will eventually leave the food source to complete their lifecycle. With fast reproduction capabilities they can be difficult to control, and have the potential to build up resistances to pesticides through natural selection.
