How to Prevent & Get Rid of Black Roof & Brown Norway Rats in Sausalito, CA

The term “rodent” refers to a large order of mammals that are known for the large, gnawing front teeth and chewing side teeth. Two rats commonly found in California are the Roof rat and the Norway rat. They become pests when they move into urban areas and damage gardens and lawns and make their way into our homes where they will get into any food they can find.

Brown Norway Rats

Norway rats are also called sewer rats or brown rats and can be found anywhere people are. These rats live in burrows that can be found around piles of wood, piles of trash, areas that are damp and around gardens and building foundations. These rats are not good climbers which is why you will find them on the ground floor of a building. Norway rats are large with grayish brown fur and a pink scaly tail. They have small ears, a blunt muzzle and measure 7-9½ inches long. They are mainly nocturnal and will come into homes when their food source gets scarce. They will gnaw through almost anything to get into your homes. These rats can cause structural damage and are vectors of diseases. They can also contaminate food and bring fleas into the home. To keep these rats away, wood needs to be piled away from your home to make it harder for them to build nests, seal any holes they will use to get into your home and eliminate sources of moisture.

Black Roof Rats

Roof rats are also called black rats and are smaller than Norway rats. They also differ from Norway rats in that they are good climbers. They will live in trees, shrubs and dense vegetation. Once they find their way inside a building they will live higher up in ceilings, attics, walls and cabinets. They are not as plentiful as Norway rats because they prefer to live in warmer climates. Roof rats have dark gray fur with gray to white bellies and scaly tails. They have large ears, pointed muzzles and the tail of a roof rat is longer than the rat’s body and tail combined. They measure 16 inches including the tail. They are also mainly nocturnal and will return to the same spot for food. Roof rats also carry disease along with fleas. To keep these rats away you also need to seal all holes they will use to get in and make sure trees and bushes are trimmed away from your home. Because they like to climb it’s important to trim branches that come close to the home.
