The Baldfaced Hornet
The baldfaced hornet is named for it's white face. These hornets are around ¾" long, and are black and white colored. Baldfaced hornets construct the big, lopsided, football-looking paper nests that hang from trees or houses. Unless these nests are located where they are a nuisance, they should be left alone. Baldfaced hornets are important to the food chain, as they are predators of many other insects. These hornets aren't attracted to human foods, and are also more docile than yellowjackets. Nevertheless, be careful around their nests, as hornets will defend them aggressively with their stingers.
