How to Control Carpet Beetles

If carpet beetles are found to be infesting the home in areas that are difficult to remove and clean such as carpets, furniture, or voids - pesticide treatment can be done. Care will have to be taken with lighter colored carpets and fabrics, as some pesticides can stain. Carpet beetle treatments can involve treating underneath area rugs, between the baseboard and carpet, and under furniture - in addition to normal spraying. Multiple treatments are a good idea as eggs can hatch out after the adults and larvae are gone, and the pesticide has worn off.

Things you can do to help:

There are several preventative measures that can be done to help keep carpet beetles from eating valuable items. The obvious is placing items that will be stored for a long time in an insect-proof bin. Cedar chests offer some protection, but this fades with the age of the wood. In addition, moth crystals or flakes can discourage larvae from eating. Be careful when bringing bird nests inside, as they can contain carpet beetles in various stages. Vacuuming is important for several reasons; it gets rid of some beetles right away, eliminates hairs which are a food source, and it will make a treatment more effective by stirring them up to the surface. Chemical free control of small items can be done by carefully heating or freezing them. Or if it is a hot day out, clothing can be simply laid out in sun, and the beetle larvae will evacuate it.
