The Midge

Midges are tiny flying insects often confused with mosquitoes. But unlike mosquitoes they don't bite, and males can have distinctive bushy antennae. They breed in aquatic environments but don't require stagnant water. This means they are common around lakes and streams. In the evenings large swarms can be seen over water, with fish jumping to catch them. They are attracted to light, and when they come buzzing around people, can be a pest because of their large numbers. Females have also been known to make a mess by depositing their dark colored egg masses around sources of light. However, in nature they are important to the food chain for both fish and birds. Control is very difficult because of their huge breeding areas.
