How to Control Cockroaches

Both baits and pesticide applications are effective at controlling cockroach infestations. Spraying or dusting in cracks, crevices, and voids where cockroaches hide can provide quick control, but also require preparation such as removal of cabinet contents. German cockroaches can develop a resistance to chemical formulations, so pesticide choice can play an important role in control. Slower-acting baiting is also very effective. New bait formulas are very attractive to cockroaches, and can lure them out of hiding. These don't require as much preparation to apply, and are less toxic to humans. Many forms of baits can be used, such as gels or bait stations. A combination of baiting and spraying is also an option, but must be done carefully to keep the baits effectiveness. Roach traps with either a pheromone scent, or sticky glue can be a way to isolate the infestation. While these traps may catch many cockroaches, they aren't enough to provide control by themselves.

Things you can do to help:

Because roaches can hitchhike into your place, it is a good idea to inspect items before bringing them into your home. Be careful to look for any signs, which could include immature roaches, egg capsules, or body parts. Roaches can also get into your home through small openings, so keeping your home well sealed can help. Cockroaches don't take very much food to survive, so anything spilled should be cleaned up thoroughly. Also dishes should be washed and put away nightly, as well as garbage taken out. By entering a dark room and switching on the light, you can see roaches running to their hiding places, and possibly get some idea of harborage points to eliminate.
