How to Control Spiders
Although pesticide treatment for spiders in or around the home isn't as effective as for other pests, it is
still helpful. Spraying a barrier around the home can help keep spiders out, and is effective at keeping out
insects they prey on. Spraying and de-webbing eaves outside is an ongoing process if you want to keep down
spider web build-up. Some inside spraying can be helpful if spider problems warrant it, such as under cabinets
or behind stored items - but generally isn't necessary. If sac, wolf, or recluse spiders are a problem inside
the home glue boards can be used to capture them when they are roaming for food. In bad infestations of some
spiders, pesticide dusting can be used in areas they are living.
Things you can do to help:
Outside, cleaning up wood or debris piles will lesson harborage for spiders. Care should be taken when cleaning
up clutter, such as wearing gloves and long sleeve shirts. Keeping your house sealed, with doors and windows well
screened is a big help in keeping spiders out. Also, be aware of trees or bushes touching the house. These can
provide an easy route for them to get inside. Removing spiders, webs, and egg sacs where they are a nuisance
will slow down their lifecycle. Brooms, websters or a vacuum work well for this. Shake out blankets and
clothes, especially those that have been stored for awhile - to be sure there isn't a spider inside. They
aren't aggressive, but will bite if pressed against your skin.
