Localized Wood Treatment

d-Limonene
If inspection finds drywood termites that are in a limited area, a localized treatment may be a good solution. This
method can also be useful for other wood destroying pests, but is most commonly used for drywoods. The first and most
important step is locating the infestation. Once the affected wood members are isolated, the treatment can begin. For
exposed, unpainted wood members a surface spray of termiticide can be done. This will soak into the wood, to control
existing termites and help to prevent new ones from establishing there. Even more effective is drilling small holes
and/or using a needle injector to get the treatment deep into the wood. This is usually the sole method of treatment for
enclosed wall framing, or painted wood surfaces. If termite holes, or damaged wood is visible, these areas should also be
injected. This way the liquid will follow the galleries in the wood - right where the termites are. The product we use in
most cases is PowerPlant. PowerPlant uses a strong citrus oil extract, called d-Limonene. D-Limonene is extracted from
citrus rinds in a complex distillation process. It poses very little risk to humans after it is applied. It is an
effective pesticide, and used in other applications such as flea treatments. When applied to wood for termites, it
penetrates the wood much deeper than other formulas. PowerPlant's formulation is rapidly absorbed with a capillary
action. It kills on contact, and makes the wood inedible to stop further damage.
