There are lots of pests that are going to try and get in the house but nothing is quite as frightening as a rat. They can be scary just based on their look but they bring more than just that. You want to make sure you know what type of rats you can expect to see and how to keep them out of your house. Hydrex Pest Control of the North Bay Inc outlines what rats you might see and how to avoid a rodent infestation.

Are Roof Rats Dangerous?

When it comes to rats there are several species that might be found around the area. The one that is a bit smaller is called a roof rat. The roof rat is still large but just not the largest type that you might find. There are some people that will refer to this rat as a black or ship rat as well. The reason that they are called a roof rat is they like to find high ground to stay out of the elements on the ground. They are found scurrying in a tree and taking a route on the roof to get the access that they need. They are usually a dark brown to black in color and reach around 16 inches in length. They also have a tail that is long and scaly and has little to no fur at all on it. Lastly they are know for their large oversized ears and eyes that seem to bulge out. Roof rats are dangerous as they can cause food poisoning by contaminating food and food preparation surfaces. In addition, roof rats may show aggression by chasing or biting when threatened and potentially transmit rat bite fever and other diseases.

Norway Rat Characteristics

Another type of rat you might see taking up space in your house is called a Norway rat. They are the rat that is much larger than the roof rat. The rat is usually a brown, grey or black in color and have a large tail as well. The body of the rat can reach up to a foot long and then the tail can add five more inches or more. They also have small ears as well as tiny eyes that set them apart from the other rats. The Norway rat can be seen getting in your house but will need a space that is a little a larger because they do not have a collapsible skeleton. Norway rats pose a risk to both people and property. These rats can carry and spread many diseases via their urine, feces and saliva including salmonellosis and trichinosis. Norway rats can also introduce disease carrying fleas, ticks, and mites to your home.
