Identification of Ants Found in Rohnert Park, CA; Carpenter, Argentine & Other Ant Species

Ants are some of the most common insect pests found in our homes and are the usual culprit when calls to pest control are made. They may be small but can be a real nuisance. Other than the fact they are annoying, they can be risky to your health and your property. If you see a line of ants in or around your home, they are likely one of four common ants found in California.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are one of the most common ants found in our homes. Their desire to excavate and nest in wet wood is how they got their name. The worker ants are black or black and red and measure ¼ inch. They will eat sweets, honeydew and other insects. Outdoor colonies of carpenter ants are created in dead trees, tree stumps, fence posts and piles of firewood. Indoor colonies are typically satellite colonies that have formed from the outside colony and can be found in subfloors, hollow doors and door and window frames.

Argentine Ants

Argentine ants originated from a few countries in South America and are one of the world’s worst animal invaders. They are extremely common in California and are responsible for wiping out other species of ants. They are very good at creating suprecolonies. The worker ants are a dull brown color and measure 1/8 of an inch. They emit a musty smell if they are crushed. These ants also like sweets, but they also like to eat oils and the buds of certain plants. They will also protect aphids because they love the honeydew excretions they produce.

Thief Ants

Thief ants have the habit of nesting close to other ants, so they can steal their food and ant larvae. This is how they got their name. These ants have a particular liking for grease and are sometimes called grease ants. They also like to eat proteins, dead insects and even dead rodents. The workers are yellowish brown in color and range from 1/32 to 1/8 inch in size. Their small size makes it easy for them to get into food packaging. They will create nests under rocks, in rotting wood, in wall voids or behind baseboards.

Pharaoh Ants

Pharaoh ants are tiny-with worker ants measuring 1/16 inches long. They are yellow, honey-colored, or orange in color. These ants love sweets, proteins, fats and other insects. Pharaoh ants can get around and will move their colony to a new location if it gets disturbed or becomes too big. Their colonies can be found in cracks and crevices and behind walls and baseboards. They will even create colonies in curtain rods and insulation. Their tiny size allows them to get very comfortable in indoor spaces and can become a huge nuisance.

Ant Control

Ants can be difficult to deal with and may require professional pest control. Their tiny size makes it hard to determine if you’ve gotten the problem under control, and unless the colony is destroyed, they will keep coming back. Professionals can identify the ants you’re dealing with, spot likely entry points and determine the most effective way to treat ants.
