Know the Signs! How to Treat & Get Rid of Western Subterranean Termites in Mill Valley, CA

Termites are one of the most destructive pests that can invade your home or business. If a colony is left unattended, it can end up costing home and business owners thousands of dollars to repair and replace the damage they have left behind. In Northern California, one of the most common termites to infest home is the Western subterranean termite. Hydrex Pest Control of the North Bay, Inc. is here to talk about these destructive pests and what signs may be present when you have an infestation.

Western Subterranean Termite Identification

Western subterranean termites are often found infesting the Northwest part of the U.S. They build very large nests underground that have a king and queen in each colony. The workers are fairly small, measuring about 1/8 inch long. They are translucent and have a soft body with no wings. These insects work around the clock and have no eyesight. The soldier termites look a bit different. They are orange and have a rectangular shaped head. They also have mandible pinchers. This type of termite also has swarmer termites that have wings and are in charge of the reproductive side of the colony. They are usually dark brown with two sets of wings.

Wood Damage from Western Subterranean Termites

These insects are attracted to douglas fir which is a common timber used in construction in Northern California. The termites will often create honeycomb tunnels within the wood and leave a very thin external shell. These tunnels are packed with moist soil and cause your structure to weaken considerably. Moisture and humidity is an essential part of their survival and they will not start building unless the area has those two things.

Termite Mud Tubes

The mud tubes built by western subterranean termites are another sign of infestation. They are constructed to help protect the termites from predators as well as the sun. These mud tubes also help provide the moisture that they need as well. These secretive insects often access a building through areas that are very hard to see during inspection. Some of the common points of entry include in-fill patios, fire hearths, expansion joints and cracks in concrete.

What Happens if You Disturb Termites

If you find a colony of western subterranean termites it is important that you don’t disturb their colony. If you don’t know what you are doing and disrupt their colony, they have keen survival skills and will move on to another part of the building and start causing more problems somewhere else. You should never disturb them without professional inspection and a live termite bait to get rid of any live termites.
