Type of Termites in Sebastopol, CA; Western Subterranean, Drywood & Other Termite Species

Termites are the most destructive pests when it comes to home damage. They can cause thousands of dollars in damage when they are left undetected for a long enough period of time. The biggest problem with termites, is the fact that they can be living in the walls of your home without you even realizing there is a problem you should be aware of. The bay area isn’t immune to termites, in fact, Hydrex Pest Control of the North Bay is here to talk about the termites that you likely see in the bay area.

Western Subterranean Termites

Homeowners will find that the Western subterranean termite is one of the biggest pest threats to their homes. It has been reported that 1 in 5 homes in Northern California have been affected by this termite. They work to hollow out your wood as they eat, creating a honeycomb pattern in layers throughout the structure. These small termites are about 1/8 inch long and are a creamy white color. They are wingless and work throughout the day. Oh yeah, and did we mention that they are blind? The workers will work their entire lifespan 24 hours a day. It’s no wonder they are able to do the damage that they do. These termites are very good at surviving which makes it important to leave a colony untouched unless you have the help of a professional. If they feel their colony is threatened, they will move to another area in the building. Effective treatment is key and should always be done professionally.

Western Drywood Termites

The Western drywood termite doesn’t live in the ground like subterranean termites. They live directly in the wooden structures. Even in the swarming months, they are likely going to infest that same structure. These termites are larger than subterranean termites, measuring about ½ inch long. They are usually an orange/brown color and one the major identifiers of drywood termites are the fecal pellets they leave behind. They are found around tunnels and they will have 6 concave sides to them. If you have a severe case of drywood termites, your entire building may need to be fumigated using sulfur fluoride. There are cases where spot treatment may be all you need.

Pacific Dampwood Termites

This termite thrives on the coast of California. If you have a home near the water, Pacific dampwood termites are a real risk for you since they love to feed off damp wood. The majority of the colony is made up of soldier termites which a large head that have long black toothed mandibles. The further down the body, you will find that they get lighter in color. Moisture is a must for these termites and in some cases, where you can get rid of excess moisture, you can get rid of an infestation.
